THE BIGGEST HAIR MYTH: “I could never pull that off.”

Hey, here’s a question. Since when did hairstyles come with a list of prerequisites?

Ok yes, if you’re going lighter you’ll want to make sure your hair is healthy enough first, but those aren’t the prerequisites we’re talking about.

We’re talking about the ‘cool’ factor – the idea that you don’t have the confidence, personality or overall ‘look’ to pull off a certain hairstyle.

Which of course is nonsense.

Social media & celebrity influence is probably partly responsible for this phenomenon. It’s great to be motivated & inspired by successful individuals, but too often this leads to us mere mortals feeling like we would need to be someone else in order to pull off a look that’s a little more on the daring side.

Well, according to research conducted by Nottingham Trent University with women between the ages 25-66, women who dyed their hair were found to feel more confident, attractive, assertive, impulsive, excited, rebellious, creative & resilient.

Yes, that’s AFTER they dyed their hair, not a list of qualities they were required to have before.

So why is it that so often our first reaction to seeing a funky, unique hairdo in Instagram is usually something along the lines of… “I love that & it looks great on her… But I could never pull it off myself.”

For a lot of us, this innate apprehension stems from being afraid of change, which is totally understandable, after all psychologically, our hair can have a huge impact on our self-esteem & identity.

For hundreds of years, elaborate wigs & beautiful hair has been associated with status, wealth & loyalty. Even now political figures & judges will adorn white, curly wigs as a sign of wisdom & sophistication.

Hair is also among the top three features — along with height & weight — used when describing others & one of the features most often recalled after a social interaction occurs.

So understandably, if we’ve got a pretty good thing going in the hair department, it can be difficult to let go & risk saying goodbye to our comfortable good-to-bad hair day ratio.

But hey, no risk, no reward – Trying out that new style or colour is a great way to tackle this fear of change head-on and help you feel in control, capable & ready to conquer the world.

This is another reason why the breakup makeover AKA the ‘break-over’ is so popular – a new look really can help you embrace a new life.

The other factor in this equation is the idea that certain hair colours are only compatible with certain complexions & features.

We’ve all heard that one colour or another is going to ‘make your eyes pop’ or ‘wash you out,’ and while we’re always happy to help our clients pick out a colour which is going to complement their features, you should never feel limited by these guidelines.

At the end of the day, you want to pick a hairstyle because it makes YOU feel beautiful, not just because a ‘What’s the Right Haircut for your Face Shape??!!’ quiz told you so.

Basically, if you LOVE something, don’t let anyone tell you you can’t WORK IT.

In the words of Oscar Wilde: Be yourself, everyone else is already taken.
