Is your hair brassy? Or is it burnt?

Does your blonde seem to be turning brassy and dull faster than usual?

Your hair not brassy! It’s burnt!!!”

We get many clients in here after a few months of getting fresh foils done by Elle J Hair or another hair salon- explaining that their hair has “turned brassy”. Certainly there are other factors to consider like sun damage, foils not being processed enough, chlorine, the wrong toner etc… but its time to get serious about what you are using during your styling process and avoiding styling where possible for optimal hair health. Imagine heating up a straightening iron or a curling iron- now if you placed your fingers in between the prongs… OUCHHH!!! 3rd degree burn’s right?… Now imagine how your hair must feel (crying face)

Here are 5 tips to stop burning your hair.

1. Avoid Heat Styling Without A Heat Protector

We can’t stress this enough. When people come into Elle J that rarely use any styling sprays before heat tools, our skin crawls. The risks associated with skipping this step include severe damage such as breakage, split ends, dryness, brittleness and overall the style won’t stay as good without it. So next time you’re thinking about straightening your hair, remember to reach for the heat protector, No Excuses!!!

2. Double Down on Heat Protector Prior to Styling

This is an important one… are you using the right heat protector for this step? Your hair should not be damp or wet from the product. Invest in a thermal spray for dry hair if you want to go in with a flat iron or curling wand.

3. Reduce the Temperature

When you’re styling fine, processed hair with heat, 180°C is a safe bet. Anything over 250°C is going to cause damage to your hair over time. As for Coloured hair- keeping your straightener’s temperature under 200°C will make your hair colour last longer.

4. Never Straighten Damp Hair

Here’s why: Hair is weakest when it’s wet and high heat from a straightener can turn the water in the hair into steam, leading to hair breakage and damage to the cuticle, this can result in frizz, split ends and sometimes even a burnt smell. ~ummm NO THANKS

5. Time to Start Scaling Back on the Amount of Heat You’re Using

If you feel like your hair may be damaged from heat, a deep conditioning mask is the best way to care for your hair. Check this post that has a round up of our favourites! If you feel like your hair is otherwise healthy and the brassy tones are not necessarily from heat, look into a clarifying shampoo or you can book into Elle J for a Blonde Gloss Maintenance Package for only $99.00.
